Indiana Jones 4~ A Review

We just returned from seeing "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," and it was about as good as I expected it to be. No, I was not very impressed with the alien theme, but having Indy and Marion back together made up for it. :) Mutt was a great sidekick and some of his lines were great, especially in the grave digging scene.

My siblings and I went into the theater with mixed hopes. We had read lots of reviews and as many spoilers as possible so that if there was something too gross we would not be taken by surprise. I was not really happy about the (spoiler) ants, aliens, or a nuclear blast but quickly shut my eyes and "got over it." Shia LaBeouf did a great job (we had first seen him in The Greatest Game Ever Played-another great movie). We loved the conversations between Mutt and Indy. Oh, and did I mention the ending? It was great!! Just watching Indy and Marion get married... it was meant to be! :)

The movie was a little slow in the middle. I have to admit I rolled my eyes when Mutt was swinging on vines through the trees in the jungle and they were trying to put Indy in some sort of trance with the skull.

At the end, and after a good discussion with my siblings, I would give the movie a 7/10.

My siblings and I also just watched all 3 movies and "the making of" specials in the last 2 weeks to prepare ourselves for Indy 4. I would give Raiders a 10/10, Temple of Doom a 8/10, and Last Crusade (my least favorite) a 5/10.

We have been having a busy summer and are brainstorming new posts. In addition, two of us are in a college class this summer and have lots of studying.

We are monitoring all of the updates for Indiana Jones 4, that comes out next May, and daily check The Raider.

Dead Man's Chest Part Three

In the last two posts I have covered the Dead Man's Chest similarities to Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom. Now it is time to explore the similar scenes of Dead Man's Chest to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

#1-Hiding in a coffin to escape something- Jack to escape prison, Indy to escape fire in tomb of knight.

#2-Lord Cutler Beckett summoning Will and talking to him. Indy is also taken against his will to speak to Walter Donovan. Both Indy and Will are told to find something based on their previous knowledge (where Jack and compass might be for Will / holy grail, father, and journal for Indy) Plus- both are served alcohol in the scene.

#3-When Jack is hanging over the fire during sacrifice, he blows at the fire. In the castle, Indy and his dad are tied up, his dad causes a fire... and blows at it. Both are trying to get free from their ropes.

#4- Both Elizabeth and Elsa are traitors. Elizabeth kisses Jack to distract him as she handcuffs him to the Black Pearl. Elsa, who is secretely working for the Nazis, takes the journal from Indy in one scene and shortly thereafter kisses him when he is tied up. Oh... and each of their names begins with "E." ;)

Both kisses give us the willies....yuck!

We will not have a new post for a week or so, but it will probably be about World's End.

Dead Man's Chest Part Two

Here is part two of my post about Dead Man's Chest. These similarities are pertaining to Temple of Doom.

#1-Dragging the guy between two men to prison in DMC. Dragging the guy back the same way during the human sacrifice.

#2-Human sacrifice in both movies (Natives & Thuggees).

#3-Pit opens up at prison like the fire area opens up for sacrificing.

#4-This one is gross- where Jack is sitting, before sacrifice, and he is wearing a necklace of fingers/thumbs…. This is similar to Indy, Willie, and Shortround coming to a Thuggee sacrifice area and there are fingers. At least Indy has the sense to not bite their fingernails. Yuck!

#5-There is a Rope Bridge in both movies.

#6-Candles at Tia Dalmas house, and candles when Indy is under the sickness.

#7-Whipping Scenes in both movies to main characters (Will and Indy).

#8-Before Jack's escape from prison and the Thuggee sacrifices, birds foreshadow what is to come.

Dead Man's Chest Part One

While watching "Dead Man’s Chest" last night, my siblings and I noticed the following similarities. These are compared to all of the Indiana Jones movies. I will do this long post in three parts over the next week or so, part one will be similarities with "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

#1- Jack using his gun to blast the coffin open/Indy uses his gun to open the hatch when Marion is trapped in cockpit during the airplane fight. Indy also uses his gun to open doors, etc....

#2- Jack looking at the "heart" chest is similar to Indy looking at the idol in the beginning of Raiders.

#3-Poison darts are shot at Will (one hits him) and poison darts are on a tree and also kill Indy's guide in the opening scene.

#4-When the cage with Will and crew falls into the water, the natives shoot things at them as they swim away. In Raiders, when Indy is swimming to the plane, he is shot at in the same way.

#5-In both the Raiders opening and Dead Man’s Chest, there is a scene where a good person (Governor Swann/Indy) comes out in the open and their accomplice is standing looking "alive", but is actually dead. As Governor Swann drives the carriage with Elizabeth, the man helping him has been killed with a knife/sword and is standing. As Governor Swann approches, the sword is pulled out and the man falls down dead. Indy’s guide is standing, looks alive, but has poison darts in his back, and is dead.

#6-They dig for the chest containing Davy Jones’ heart = They dig for the Ark of the Covenant.

#7- Both Indy and Will have to leave behind their girl when she is captured.

Crusaders and Pirates

These are a number of the similarities concerning Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 2.

1: The Last Crusade opens with a flashback of Indy’s childhood, and “Curse of the Black Pearl” opens with a flashback of Elizabeth’s childhood.

2: Elsa is a traitor to Indiana, and Elizabeth is a traitor to Jack in Dead Man’s Chest. (Though some fans will debate Elizabeth’s traitor status. :-))

3: Elsa kisses Indy while he is tied up, and Elizabeth kisses Jack while she is in the process of tying him up and betraying him on the ship in Dead Man’s Chest.

4: On the tank in Last Crusade, Indy blocks the sights and the Nazis inside cannot see. In Curse of the Black Pearl, Jack steps in front of Barbossa’s telescope and say’s “I’m having a thought here”.

5: While on the train, young Indy grabs the tube attached to the water tower and swings around in a circle to escape being caught. While running from the soldiers, in Curse of the Black Pearl, Jack grabs a rope from a wooden crane and swings around in a circle to escape being caught.

It's been awhile but we still have a lot of Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean to cover. :-)

In Temple of Doom, after "the basket game" reference, in which, Indy reaches for his pistol and finds it's not there; he runs toward the camera. Then he stops, looks crestfallen, and runs back the other way. This being done a stream of Thuggees run after him. = The exact same thing happens to Jack Sparrow in Dead Man's Chest. (I've never seen Star Wars but I have heard that this is something related to Han Solo; that makes it easy to see why it's in Temple of Doom!)

I'm wrapping up Temple of Doom, in preparation of moving on to The Last Crusade, but as with Raiders, we will likely come back to it.

Temple of Doom and Pirates 1 & 2

In Temple of Doom, there are six main similarities that we have found, after watching it only twice.

#1- The hearts are taken out of the sacrifice victims = Davy Jones’ heart.

#2- Rope bridge in Temple of Doom = Rope bridge in Dead Man’s Chest native scene.

#3- Indy being “one of the Thuggees” = Jack being “one of the natives.”

#4- The Thuggees wanting the Sankara Stones to rule the world = the East India Trading Company wants Davy Jones’ heart to rule the sea.

#5- Indy threatening to drop the Sankara Stones into the river = Elizabeth threatening to drop the Medallion into the ocean in Curse of the Black Pearl.

#6- Willie and Indy chase the diamond and the antidote around Club Obi Wan = Ragetti chases his eye around in Curse of the Black Pearl.

1. Marion hits her pursuer in the "Basket Game" sequence with a frying pan and knocks him unconscious. Elizabeth hits Pintel with her bed warmer, in the scene before they kidnap her, and knocks him unconscious.

I believe we have covered everything on our list for Raiders of the Lost Ark similarities but when I say “for now” I mean that we will probably come back with more in the future.
I think I should cover the last thing on my original list, since several friends and visitors to the blog have also mentioned it.

The parallels between Sallah and Mr. Gibbs.
1. Sallah is an old friend that Indy contacts in Cairo, similarly Jack looks up his old friend Gibbs in Tortuga.
2. Both men are loyal, trustworthy, careful, they often caution their friends from acting too hastily, and frequently say things that make everyone laugh.

Alright and now on to, “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”!
(Just give us a few days to collect our lists and thoughts. :-) )

Raiders of the Lost Ark and Curse of the Black Pearl

~More similarities between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Pirates Movies~

(These are slightly more “nitpicky” but still relevant and interesting. :-) )

1: Indy thinks Marion is killed when the truck blows up. Elizabeth thinks Will is killed when the Interceptor blows up in Curse of the Black Pearl.

2: Whenever the Ark of the Covenant is mentioned there is an eerie breath of wind and the lights flicker. In Pirates, whenever “the medallion” catches the sun or “the curse” is mentioned there is an eerie breath of wind and the lights flicker.

3: Marion pretending to be drunk to trick Belloq in the tent scene is paralleled by Elizabeth pretending to be drunk to trick Jack on the beach.

4: Indy threatening Belloq with a gun but not shooting. I believe this happens more than once; in the bar scene and also when Indy threatens to blow up the Ark. This is similar to the “this shot was not meant for you” plot line.

5: Rolling Ball is paralleled by the “vine cage” on the native’s island. (From “Dead Mans Chest”).

6: Indy goes down into the Well of Souls to get the Ark of the Covenant and similarly, Will goes under deck on the Interceptor to get the Medallion. Both end up trapped with the object they want taken away.

7: The skeletons in the Well of Souls, seeming to be alive when Marion runs into them, is interestingly referenced by skeletons that “are alive” in Curse of the Black Pearl.

8: Belloq getting the better of Indy, especially in the South America scene, is paralleled by Barbossa getting the better of Jack. In point, the “we named the monkey Jack” scene. Screen shot comparisons here.... MK

Today, on my first post, I am going to point out Elizabeth and Marion similarities.

#1-After Indy leaves the bar, Marion takes the Medallion that she has been wearing around her neck and as she is fingering it, the candle flame moves. This is like the scene in “Black Pearl” where Elizabeth is wearing the medallion and she looks at the candle flame that is moving in the draft, right before Port Royal is attacked by the Black Pearl. Both are scenes of mysterious foreboding involving a candle flame.

#2-When Marion hides in a basket in Cairo, it is akin to Elizabeth hiding in the cupboard. Both are being chased by bad guys and something gives them away. For Marion it is the monkey, for Elizabeth the rug.

This one is not a Marion/Elizabeth scene, but I just figured it out while watching “Raiders.”

#3-When Indy is about to fight the tall, black-dressed man in the market in Cairo, the man has a sword and Indy starts toward him to fight, thinks twice, and pulls out his gun and shoots him. This is similar to the Jack and Will scene in the Blacksmith shop, where they are sword fighting and Jack pulls out his gun, and Will says “You Cheated.”

Overview and Main Points

Let’s start off with an overview on our first ever post. My siblings and I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, for the first time, on July 12th-2005 after borrowing the DVD from a friend. We loved it and watched it again over the months until we could recite whole scenes of witty dialogue. We also saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in July of 2006. In September of 2006 we borrowed “Raiders of the Lost Ark” from the library and watched it, for the first time. We were surprised and pleased by how good it was; but while we were watching it we noticed that certain things seemed familiar. By the middle of the movie we had noticed many similarities to Pirates of the Caribbean and they were beginning to add up. I searched online to see if anyone had caught what we’d seen…but no, very few people had. We bought the Indiana Jones Trilogy in October for my brother’s birthday and proceeded to watch the rest of the movies. We were shocked to notice many, many, more similarities to Pirates and finally we started making a list. This post will explain several of the largest parallel themes and plot lines.

1: The head piece of the Staff of Ra is very much like the Aztec Gold medallion; thus the whole plot of “Curse of the Black Pearl” is shockingly similar to “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Girl has a medallion that an evil and/or supernatural power covets, much fighting over it, and finally the evil is destroyed by the very thing they wanted to find. A cursed chest and a cursed chest…not very subtle now that you think about it.

2: The entire Marion and Belloq tent scene is paralleled by the Elizabeth and Barbossa dinner scene in “Curse of the Black Pearl.” Notice the apples on the table as Marion and Belloq sit down, the butter knife being hidden by Marion and used in an escape attempt. Belloq has a dress for Marion to change into, just as Barbossa does. Also, note that Captain Katanga has a dress on board ship for Marion and this is referenced by Jack in “Dead Man’s Chest” saying, “I have a dress in my cabin.”

3: Marion shooting the thug in the bar and Indy thinking for a second that it was meant for him is parallel to the “one last shot” scene in the cave on “Curse of the Black Pearl.”

4: The monkey on the dark side and the monkey on the dark side. (Raiders just had the sense to kill the monkey while the killing was good. :-) )

5: Indy is protective of his hat and Jack is protective of his hat.

6: South American Natives chasing Indy across the field and the Natives chasing Jack across the beach in “Dead Man’s Chest.”
